Pictures of a City

Linked below, a short but sweet history of James Joyce's involvement with the Volta Cinema which opened in Dublin in December 1909, purportedly, Ireland's first picture house but it's debatable. Joyce himself did not stay with the cinema very long, disappointed by the lack of enthusiasm of the Dublin populace for the Volta's program of European imports. There's something very appropriate about Joyce having a connection to moving pictures - apparently the author met Eisenstein in the late 20's, both mutual admirers, and I can see Joyce's influence on the cinema of Godard and Fellini, especially 8½.
